Jellico and Tellico 5/26-6/3 2001

This is stop #1 on my 10 day wheeling trip. Also check out stop #2, Tellico, NC.

Jellico, TN 5/26-5/29

Friday : Left for my long week of camping and wheeling. First stop was Jellico, TN for a Memorial day weekend ride put on by the Trailkeepers Foundation. I went down to Jellico, TN after work, registered for the ride, picked out which trailrides I wanted to go on. Went over to the campground and met some of the other guys there. Discovered I could air my air mattress up off of my tires!

Saturday : We met at the the Jellico town square. About 30 jeeps and my Bronco. I went on trailride on the Cliffhanger trail. Cliffhanger was a cool trail that goes to the top of the mountain and follows the ridge for awhile with lots of cool overlooks. There was a side trail we did that led down to a cool cave you can park a dozen vehicles in. My brakes were squealing all day. Also, my power steering went out for about 10 minutes then came back.

Sunday : I went on trailride on the Worser trail (it keeps getting worser and worser). Fun little trail has a few good rock formations to climb. The Jeep J10 was making a horrible screeching noise all day that no one could figure out. When the engine died on the trail they popped the hood and found that the carb stud was too long and was rubbing on the hood! The engine died because both motor mounts were broken and the engine was moving so much it pulled the plug on a wire going to the coil. They chained both motor mounts down and used his winch to tighten it. Worser ends up at an awesome overlook. You could probably see 20 miles in 180 degrees. The exit to the trail is 7 miles worth of railroad bed that only had the gravel left. The gravel was nothing but whopdy doos. That was real fun to go flying down! There was a section half way down the rail bed where there used to be a bridge, but now it was a nice decent to the bottom and climb up the other side. My brakes were still squealing al day. After the trail ride we headed over to the challenge area where there was lots of rock crawling fun. An FJ40 ended up on his side trying to get up a steep hill. He bashed his rocker in pretty far, but it straightned right back out.

Monday : I went on trailride to the sand cave. There was a river crossing that was fun. The first time Tim and Chad crossed here the water was much higher and it was up to the top of Tim's doors. My brakes started squealing all the time now..even when not on the brakes.. I had a caliper that was sticking and dragging the rotor. I left my Bronco on a spot on the trail we'd be coming back to and rode with someone else. The sandcave was an awesome cave with a floor of sand and even a 200' waterfall. We picked up my Bronco on the way out and I tried to drive back to camp without using my brakes (since they had pried the caliper open). It was real fun driving down a mountain road.. but I didn't make it.. I had to hit the brakes in a couple tight turns. I was supposed to go to Tellico after the trail ride, but I decided to stay in Jellico an extra day to fix the brakes.

Tuesday : I went to a garage some people recommended (everything that people had done there was only $25 labor). I knew if I tried to do it myself there I wouldn't have the right tools, or something would come up I couldn't fix. I ended up spending over 4 hours at the garage because they took over an hour to get parts and they got parts several times. When they finally did get the right caliper (the one I told them it took in the first place) it wouldn't line up because there was a piece of the knuckle in the way. I told them to cut a notch in the caliper because I vaguely remember that from a write-up someplace and it worked.. I finally left Jellico around 1pm.
